Jean Henry Dunant (Nobel Peace Prize 1901)

Jean Henry Dunant was born in Geneva (Switzerland) on May 8, 1828 was a Swiss businessman,  philanthropist and activist for the cause of humanity, whose work was recognized internationally with the first Nobel Peace Prize together with Frédéric Passy in 1901. Dunant witnessed during a business trip in 1859, in the after math of the Battle of Solferino in Italy, the impact of which led him to write his memoirs and experiences in the book A Memory of Solferino which called for the creation of a corps of volunteers to help the war wounded.

This request served later to the founding of the International Red Cross. In 1864, the Geneva Convention was adopted on the basisof some of the tenets of Dunant humanitarians.

Emil Adolf von Behring (Nobel 1901)

Emil Adolf von Behring Hansdorf born (town of the former East Prussia) on March 15, 1854 (bacteriologist) was the winner of the first Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1901. He entered the Military Medical Academy in Berlin in 1874,  graduating in 1878 and passing the state exam in 1880. He worked as a military surgeon.

Performed work practices on issues related to communicable diseases. In 1889 he left the army to join as an assistant to Robert Koch Institute of Hygiene of the University of Berlin. In 1891 he moved to the Institute of Infectious Diseases, led by Koch himself. He taught at the University of Halle in 1894 and, in 1895, director of the Institute of Hygiene of Marburg,  until his death on March 31,1917.

Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff (Nobel Chemistry 1901)

Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff born in Rotterdam (Netherlands) on August 30, 1852 (Dutch chemist) won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1901 by establishing the principles of stereochemistry and chemical kinetics. Was considered one of the precursors of stereochemistry, to explain the two isomeric forms of tartaric acid and other optical isomerism cases,  proposed in 1874, while Joseph A.Le Bel, the hypothesisof asymmetric tetrahedral carbon

Albert Einstein (Physics Nobel 1921)

Albert Einstein (Ulm, Germany, March14, 1879 - Princeton, United States, April 18, 1955) was a German-born physicist, later nationalized U.S. and Switzerland. He is considered as the most important scientist of the twentieth century, in addition to being the best known. In 1905, still an unknown young physicist, who was employed at the Patent Office in Bern, (Switzerland), published his theory of special relativity.

It sat in a simple theoretical framework, based on simple physical principles, concepts and phenomena studied earlier by Henri Poincare and Hendrik Lorentz.

Probably the most famous equation in physics at the grass roots level, is the mathematical expression of mass-energy equivalence, E = mc ², derived by him as a logical consequence of this theory. That same year he published other works that would lay some of the foundations of statistical physics and quantum mechanics.
In 1915, he presented the theory of general relativity. In 1919, when the British observations of a solar eclipse confirmed his predictions about the bending of light, was idolized by the press.

Einstein became a popular icon of the science world famous, a privilege available to very few scientists. For their explanation of the photoelectric effect and his numerous contributions to theoretical physics, in 1921 won the Nobel Prize in Physics and the Theoryof Relativity, as the scientist who was given the task of evaluating it, did not understand,  and feared risking that was eventually found to be erroneous.

At that time was still considered some what controversial by many scientists. in December 1932, the scientist left Germany for the United States, where he taught teaching at Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Became a U.S. citizen in 1940. In his later years he worked to integrate in a single theory the electromagnetic and gravitational force. He died in Princeton, New Jersey on April 18, 1955.

Proclaimed as the "character of the twentieth century" and as the preeminent scientist in the famous Time magazine.
